Starting a New LifeSTARTING A NEW LIFE

Arriving in Israel is an exciting prospect for Jewish families and individuals making aliyah.  For many of them, they are entering the country for the first time in lives, and the experience is at once thrilling but also somewhat overwhelming.

The Jewish Agency, Israel’s national government, and municipal authorities cooperate to assist olim as they go through what is termed the “absorption process.”  Most  newcomers can receive financial assistance from the government during their first months in Israel, a great help in covering the costs of rent, utilities, groceries, and other daily expenses.

For olim who have not yet mastered Hebrew, they can enroll in ulpan, specialized Hebrew classes for beginners.  Special housing at absorption centers is available in some cities, as well.

Newcomers can often find naturalized Israelis who came originally from the same country or region.  Russian speakers, for example, have come to Israel in the tens of thousands since 1991, and there are Russian-speaking communities throughout Israel.  Spanish speakers from South America also make up small communities across the country, as do Ethiopian Jews, English-speaking olim, French speakers from France and North Africa, and other groups.

However, Israel’s culture can be quite different from what newcomers are used to in their countries of origin.  Adults and youngsters are surrounded by Hebrew, a language they may not know.  Learning useful job skills and finding work is not always easy, and sometimes newcomers find themselves facing financial challenges they did not expect.

While Ezra International’s mandate is to assist Jewish people returning to Israel from the four corners of the earth, we have partnered with other organizations to assist olim while they establish themselves in Israel.  Their return to the homeland of their forefathers--and their prosperity in the Land--is undeniable proof of the Lord's faithfulness, a sure sign to all nations that brings glory to His Name.

When Zhenya and her daughter Nelia telephoned our offices in Ukraine from their new home in Israel, they told us about their wonderful life there.  They live near Haifa, close to the Mediterranean Sea.  Now in Israel for more than two years, they have started a new life there—when Nelia’s young children ask their mother, “When will we go back home to Ukraine?” her reply is always the same:  “This is our home now, and we’re not going back to …
At Home In The Promised Land
2012-02-07
Ezra International’s team in Russia helped Reuven return home at last—to Israel, the land God promised to his forefathers centuries ago.  As a Jewish young man, Reuven believes that Israel is where he belongs, his place as the Almighty swore long ago to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moving to Israel is, for Reuven, the fulfilment of a dream he has held all his life.  He has spent the last few years studying Hebrew and learning more about the traditions of Judaism.  …
